I am a trend. I am not so very special. Middle-aged, overweight, celiac struggling to lose the pounds, get some nourishment to heal my body after years of undiagnosed celiac disease and living with teenagers and a tall runner husband and their calorie needs.
Did you know that the number of people in the US living with celiac disease is roughly that of the state of Nevada. The research also shows that most people(34%) are diagnosed in adulthood. Older women make up a large part of that group. Then there is the disturbing fact, proven by recent studies that there is an increase in BMI within 1-2 years of the diagnosis. And recent research says that children and young adults recover more quickly and perhaps fully, whereas those of us diagnosed later in life are the opposite. Longer recovery and not so many fully recovered. So here I am almost a month before my 50th birthday and I am an overweight celiac who is hot flashing nearly every hour like a sweaty, chubby middle-aged cuckoo clock. I met with my doctor and got some advice and some natural ways to cool the hot flashes and support my thyroid and I decided it was time to lose some weight and get in better shape. I also decided I needed a little help and have gathered a support group of gluten free experts to make sure my diet is nutritionally sound and my fitness routine is efficient. I will also have some cooking advice and pep talks from those who have been down this road with success.
Tomorrow is the story of how I got here and where I want to go. Wednesday is the weigh in. The experts will use that information to start evaluating me and my plan. So join us here for 30 days to 50 as I jump start my life and get back on track for the next half century. I will be asking you to participate with your tips and advice and questions for our experts. Some giveaways with gluten free products that relate to the topics each week will also be part of the fun. Please join me on this journey and send some encouragement my way. I could use it.
Until tomorrow. . .
